Taken at Sci Fi Weekender in Pwllheli, Wales, where our long-awaited Hobbit group finally came together for the first time. This costume was a massive learning curve for me, and I had an amazing time cosplaying Tauriel - mainly due to how brilliant the rest of the group was! We had our costumes complimented by Graham McTavish (Dwalin in the Hobbit films) and Royd Tolkien (JRR Tolkien's great grandson), and then went on to win SECOND PRIZE in the cosplay contest 8D We all put so much work into these costumes, and it was wonderful that they went down as well as they did.
Hello As far as I recall, it's just a medium weight cotton so that it's not too flimsy but also allows some movement. It's probably a little too vivid a colour to use for Tauriel, but it was great to sew and gives enough support in the bodice area while still flowing nicely in the skirt. I bought the fabric at the market local to me at the time, so it wasn't an online purchase of any sort. Hope that was helpful to you!
Awww, thank you so much, that's so lovely of you to say! :'D
The armour's actually made out of craft foam xD I ironed each section to make the material look more leather-like, as well as indenting the designs at the same time, painted and weathered it all, then went over the indents with a gold paint pen. I was nervous as hell about it but it turned out okay!
Craft foam is incredible, isn't it? I made a set of armour for my Loki cosplay with foam (later switched to worbla because the foam was not weathering my use of it very well), but it's amazing what you can do with it, and it's so cheap! Anyway, yeah, your designs are gorgeous and you did a lovely paint job as well--I definitely thought it was leather or something like it.
